Three steps to moving through anxious feelings with more self-love.

Stress gets a bad rap and for good reason, the word alone makes me shiver and my bum clench, but the reality is stress is energy-in-motion, it rises for a reason and needs a good place to go…

It’s the high-alert energy that moves through your body to get you out of bed in the morning or when you’re feeling under pressure at work. It can feel hectic, irrational, “in-a-rush”, and overwhelming.

You’ll also experience stress differently; as anticipation or motivation when you’re going on holiday, or an incredible opportunity has just landed in your lap! It’s still a bit jittery but this is the healthy kind of stress, the beneficial kind, and it’s called eustress.

Eustress is the one that helps us build resilience and confidence and teaches us to embrace our wobbles, it’s the one we play with most when we work out or come to our yoga practice.

Stress is an everyday process your body is designed to flow in and out of, but that doesn’t mean it’s any more pleasant when it does show up!

Learning to recognise your body’s unique nudges allows you to consciously (and compassionately) respond to what you’re feeling and rebalance rather than unconsciously reacting to your experience.

Getting to know how stress and anxiety manifest in your body means you’ll notice a shift in your mood sooner and when those familiar sensations arise you can remind yourself they won’t last forever.

Here are three steps to moving through stress and anxious emotions with ease and self-love…

Recognise
Get to know your body’s signals, get curious and learn to pick up on the subtle shifts in your mood, and pay attention to how you’re breathing. Make a mental list or write them on paper and make friends with your stress responses.

Remember
Remind yourself you’ve been here before and this too shall pass.
Feel the ground beneath your feet and remember your toolkit.

Rebalance
You can change how you’re feeling simply by changing how you’re breathing, remember the power of a good sigh!
Access your inner resources, use what feels good, reconnect to your body and help yourself to feel present, calm and safe.

These three steps are the foundation of what I’ll be sharing in my next workshop, Movement Is Medicine, helping you get to know your incredible body and share ways you can support it through somatic practices that will reconnect you to your body and help to release any tension you’re holding there.
